Description During his tenure as the Prime Minister, efforts were made to strengthen the industries with the help of private sector. Projects like Ghazi Brotha and Gawadar Miniport were initiated. Land was distributed among landless peasants in Sindh. Relations with the Central Asian Muslim Republics were strengthened and E. C. O. was given a boost. In an attempt to end the Afghan crisis, the "Islamabad Accord" was reached between various Afghan factions. His most important contribution was economic progress despite American sanctions on Pakistan through the Pressler Amendment. Pakistan Muslim League again won the elections held in February 1997, and Mian Nawaz Sharif was re-elected as Prime Minister with an overwhelming majority. Taking advantage of his absolute majority in the National Assembly, he added a landmark in the constitutional history of Pakistan by repealing the controversial Eighth Amendment. This Thirteenth Constitutional Amendment stripped the President of his powers, under Article 52(b) of the Eighth Amendment, to dismiss the Prime Minister and dissolve the National Assembly. He added another milestone to the Constitution when his Parliament adopted the anti-defection Fourteenth Amendment Bill. His development venture of the Lahore-Islamabad motorway has also been appreciated by a segment of the society, while others have criticized it for being an extravagance for a developing country.

  so far so bad
Well! So far he & his party acted like self centered party, just like PPP in order to get rid of old NAB cases and other issues. In short he, his party and there alliance did nothing for PAKISTAN and its people. All they are doing is just protecting themselves.

  This is ? i think!
I think this Gov. is gonna fail to restore judicary bcoz of there own intrests as this GANG OF THREE i.e PML(N), PPP & ANP will get more specific selfcentered parties as soon as they get in the assembly. So it doesn't matter ? Sharif Brothers do or Bhutto Party do.

He's the cock eyed in the world of blind
He's the cock eyed in the world of blind. He takes a stand against a regime or a country(Kargil,India). But fails to complete his mission. He like Musharaf bowed to American pressure in the Kargil war. Maybe its time he will prove the pundits wrong. Lets keep our fingers crossed and hope for the best.

A champion of masses or a Traitor of masses
Nawaz Sharif, has portrayed himself after coming from self exile as a champion of democracy and judicary. He has taken a clear cut stand on various issues. But he has also acceptted some nationally low-profile but at constituency level quite strong turn coats under his wings. He was a product of establishment, coming in limelight during Zia era. He has had no political experience before that unlike many big wigs in his party such as Makhdoom Javaid Hashmi who has been a renowned Student leader. The actions of Nawaz Sharif before the millitary takeover are shaded all too grey. And after the takeover itself the way Nawaz left the country leaving behind his party leaders and workers shackeled up and then continiously drummed around that he had not brokered a deal untill the moment the Royal family itself intervened makes all the voice of independence of judicary and democracy all too vague. What if he is yet again working in the hands of vested interests who might want a free judicary for time being to tranish its image and the icons of judicary itself is a question which is yet to be answered.

  WHAT I FEEL WILL HAPPEN
I have a feeling that following would happen in the political circus of our country. 1. PPP, PML-N COALITION 2. PPP UNABLE TO RESTORE JUDICIARY 3. PPP TRIES TO AMEND 58 2B CLAUSE 4. MUSHARAF DISMISSED THE GOVT AND HANDS IT OVER TO KAYANI 5. PPP DISINTEGRATES 6. RIOTS 7. SUCIDE BOMBINGS 8. KAYANI HOLDS 'FREE AND FAIR' ELECTIONS 9. NAWAZ SHARIF BECOMES A NATIONAL HERO AS HE WOULD RESTORE THE JUDICIARY AND WIN THE ELECTION WITH 2/3 MAJORITY 10. HE WILL TAKE A STANCE AGAINST EVIL FORCES 11. WONT BE ABLE TO TAKE A STAND AGAINST IT AFTER SOMETIME. 12. TURMOIL 13. REVOLUTION FROM THE YOUTH TO CHANGE THE SYSTEM OF GOVERNANCE AND LEADERS .... I might be wrong but this is what i think.

  Gained in this election
This person did not have time for election campaign as he arrived on the last day to file nomination. The sole reason for his victory over PML Q is that the support he gave to Cheif justice and the support he gave to the restoration of judiciary. Smart move indeed.

He might be corrupt, might have made some extra money at power, but who doesnt ? All together if i had to ever choose from BB and Nawaz, I would choose Nawaz because of the concrete work he has done in the country. I appreciate his efforts for the restoration of democracy and judiciary. He has been front runner and should be given a chance to bring a change to our political culture. Stop victimising, lets forget differences and give this guy the chance to perform.

  reply to munir khan
I agree with Mr waleed. Infact Nawaz shareef really never had to rule 5 years and all the plans he had were ruined by intruders. I identify the lack of knowledge of Mr Munir khan who is calling him names which isn't allowed even in civilized way of talking nor by religion which i don't wanna drag into. Munir khan Motorway was his idea of first term which benazir late stopped when she came into power and yet this guy of impressive determination managed it. Ask yourself and reply honestly anyone except nawaz would let pakistan do nukes? He made Qadir khan hero on media and Musharaf tagged him guilty. How on earth you call him crook when you know corrupt part of his party was laters known as qatil league and as person he was way better then them. In politics you have to consider people with influence an if you don't then you are left like pakstanf khan. This nation with education level of 30% won't let people like pakstanf khan come in power so Nawaz is the second choice in my opnion.

  Nation's slap
Don't mind me saying you people are immature who were happy with Qatil league but calling him crook who had courage to make you first muslim necular state. He was thrown out of power many times once court got him back and he had very less chances of working for nation but in small time he had, he eventually came up with one of the greatess programs this third world country has seen. Pakistani nation slapped critics who been saying that he is old tiger.Thought the influence of bhutoo's sympathy votes got them few more seats but in long run its him who is capable of getting country out of blue.

Actually what happen when a person has been captivated by miletery dictator then this is logically country mate responsibility to reject the action of militery. but here in pakistan unfortunetly public are not so much educated interm of politics or such as minister, rolling party workers, or oppostion leader to make people together angaint the action taken by militery but where whole system can make any time alligation on minister the are currupt how can the fight against dictator such as musharaff. (NAB) is nothing except threaten to any one just listen us and do that othen we will not going to spear you though you would not able to stand among the publics. pura ka pura system hijack hai. but now we hope that when nawaz shariff come in power he will take so tough decision against the uncertain activities of militery by cabinet or roll of law....

Lets have a brief look of musharaf, Lies every single time infront of world there is not way his hijacking claim could be valid. Atleast he had guts to refuse American president that even you are super power but i am first accountable infront of my nation and what did bibi did? sorry she is dead now but she was disgrace and so is MMA. What did Nation give Nawaz in reply of his brave act. Couldn't even collect guts to come on road and tell dictator that who are you to throw elected parliment. Why moan now? It hurts but God said I don't help them who don't help themselves and nation chasing idealogy of west and only concerned about their image has lost grip on changing economic world where this region will get economic power. Why bring war of others to your country when you people are dying for food? So you think germans will come to speak for you? chinese will? When I see i only see a confused nation running after luxuries and wannabes. where is the beam of hope? pakstanf couldn't wake you up atleast vote for Nawaz

He is capable to bring a change, but he should bring the change in himself first....
To my surprise, I read in the newspaper today that Nawaz Sharif is ready to join hands with PPP to make the next government. Its a noble thought but there are alot of factors which I hope Mr Sharif has in his mind before making a coalition with his one time foes. Firstly, PPP has stated clearly that they will not support an impeachment against Musharaf. This indicates that there is some sort of a deal between the PPP and Musharaf. Secondly, PPP and PML-N has been involved in political victimisation for decades and there is no guarantee they wont indulge in this game again. There is a clash of idealogies between the two parties and it seems an uphill task they would be successful togather. Thirdly, every vote Nawaz Sharif gets is because people are voting against Musharaf's policy, Musharaf-PPP deal and to show solidarity with the 'judiciary crisis' i.e they support the re-appointment of the deposed judges and Sharif should take actions according to the public. He made all his party members take oath that they will 're-install' the judiciary and vowed that they will not create a working relationship with Musharaf. By joining hands with PPP, he would break this promise as Late Benazir Bhutto's party will 'any-how' shake hands with Musharaf for the sake of power through the 'sympathy vote' they would get. It would be highly recomended that Nawaz Sharif should practise what he preaches because that's the only way he will make space in hearts of people again as any wrong move from here would be a fatal loss for him. He should make his influence positive for the nation as it is in dire need of it.

  tough decision
I'm trying to decide whether I'll be voting in these elections and things that I'm considering about Nawaz Sharif are: In his favour: 1. He is committed to restoring the judiciary and his party has taken an oath on that. 2. During his tenure, when he was removed by the President, he turned to the Supreme Court and was in fact reinstated. This shows his beleif in democratic processes. 3. He reversed the 8th Amendement of Gen Zia ul Haq that hung like a sword of democles over the heads of all democratically elected PMs and governments. 3. He took serious steps in trying to curb sectarian violence in the country. Things that go against him: 1. He got his chance twice and Pakistan experienced its worst levels of economic growth. Granted that he had limitations. For example, during his first tenure, the US government placed heavy sanctions on Pakistan. First by withdrawing its support after the Gulf War and leaving Pakistan in the cold and secondly, after the nuclear tests. 2. Levels of corruption were very high (albeit better than Benazir's tenure when Pakistan was ranked the second most corrupt country in the world). 3. He is conservative and may introduce regressive policies, especially with regards to women and minorities. Let's not forget the Shariat Bill he passed during his second term in office. Are we willing to put our faith in the lesser of many evils or do we just boycott the elections? That is a question I have to find an answer to within the next week.

  Second Chouce for PM
I think Nawaz Sharif is not a bad choice for a Prime Minister given the current scenario, where the country needs to unite desperately. Yes, he may be corrupt, uneducated and may be "Paindoo", but the fact is that such things aren't on the priority right now. Right now, the first and foremost thing to ensure is the unity of the federation. With Benazir Bhutto I saw that happening, with her gone he is the second choice. Secondly, he also supports the Justice Movement. I think in Pakistan, only the Pakistan Army is a mature department of the government (if you can call it part of the government), the rest definitely need to mature and the Judicial Movement might have achieved that had it not been disbanded. If Nawaz Sharif can ensure that Justice will prevail, we shouldn't worry about him being corrupt or his cronies being criminals.

  he can bring a change
Under him Pakistan unites. His 2/3 majority proves it, while even in the previous elections, his old friends and now foes of the rival pml factionvwon the elections. he can create a change and that is a proven fact. He got the controversial presidential amendment removed, ordered 6 nuclear blasts to indias 5 and has a big role in the development of the gawadar project and economic boom in punjab. He needs to bring a change by bringinig prosperity in other provinces just like what he did in punjab, needs to make loyal friends and should not indulge in political victimisation once he gets into power.

If I had to choose the lesser of two evils between Nawaz Sharif and Benazir, I think I would choose Nawaz. If anything, regardless of both candidates corruption allegations, Nawaz tended to have provided a bit more results. But if they could both just leave the country, that would be the triumph of Pakistan. I think we need new faces in the government and we need to kick out the old stuff...
